Type of institution
The UAM is a modern university leader on research and teaching in Spain in Social and Natural Sciences and in Humanities too. The university employs some 2,500 teaching staff and has a roll of 34,000 students. It has a very strong research activity and is one of the best-placed Spanish universities in international rankings. The Department of Sociology have an intense research and teaching activity about ageing in collaboration with other departments and universities.
In 2009 the UAM engaged "Campus de Excelencia" project. The main objetives are: to strengthening strategic research areas and increasing their international visibility, improving the quality of teaching and the development of a strong transfer network in order to lead the social, cultural and economic development of Madrid North. Recently the project have maked an strong comitment with social sciences and invited their staff to make proposals about strategic research areas, including social and economics aspects of ageing.
