The German Centre of Gerontology (DZA) is a research institute in the field of ageing. The DZA is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women, and Youth and is located in Berlin.


The German Centre of Gerontology (DZA) combines social and behavioural ageing research and policy consulting. The bye-laws of the institute declare its purpose to produce, evaluate and disseminate knowledge in the field of ageing and to use this knowledge for independent scientific consultation for society and social policy as well as for social reporting. The DZA conducts research in the fields of social and behavioural gerontology. Moreover, the institute provides several information systems and contact information on institutions, which are concerned in Europe and throughout the world with social gerontology.

Main research areas

Research at the German Centre of Gerontology focuses on the following topics: (a) employment of ageing workers and retirement; (b) economic power, economic behaviour, and financial situation of older people; (c) health, health behaviour, health and long-term care systems for ageing societies; (d) family, partnership, and social networks in old age; (e) societal participation of older people. These topics are analyzed with regard to social change, individual development, and societal distribution of resources and social inequality.
