Type of institution
Central Union for the Welfare of the Aged functions as an interest organization for 350 organizations of elderly people's issues, offering information, assistance and training. The member organisations run service and old age homes as well as dementia units, arranging home and support services and leisure-time activities for the elderly. The Union also works in collaboration with other organizations and the public sector, giving expert advice e.g. on legislation. The Union has carried out several development projects for improvement of elderly people's services. Development work has involved e.g. home care, quality of services, and preventive and rehabilitative elderly care.
Central Union for the Welfare of the Aged works to improve the welfare and social security of elderly people. The organisational values include respect for elderly people in the society, reliability in relation to partners, and expertise in issues of elderly care. In 2002, the Union launched a research program on geriatric rehabilitation. The aim of the program is to study the position, potential and effectiveness of the third sector in geriatric rehabilitation and to develop new models of rehabilitation.
Main research areas
Loneliness of the aged: Prevalence of loneliness in elderly population; effectiveness of psychosocial group rehabilitation in preventing loneliness Family care of the elderly: The everyday life and experiences of the elderly families in family care; the meanings given to care by the family members and professionals; effectiveness of an individually tailored and comprehensive support program in prolonging community care of demented patients. The role of third sector in elderly care and rehabilitation: Aphasia rehabilitation; quality of life at different phases of care, elderly clients' commitment to rehabilitation.
