The Department of Medical Sociology is part of the Centre for Psychosocial Medicine. The central tasks are education and research. The research activities are organized in 5 working groups: -Social factors influencing health and care (including old age) -Social Gerontology -Health promotion -Migration and health -Hospital research


For more than 20 years the Working Group is conducting projects on the issue of Social Gerontology. The local, national and European projects concern the improvement of quality of health care for older people and their relatives. The results are directed to support practitioners and politics to find solutions for social and health politics. Actually the EU-funded project EUROFAMCARE is the centre of all activities.

Main research areas

-analysis of the health and social care sector with respect to its structure -concepts of individual and structural integrated care for older people (case- and care management) -assessment for older people and their families -analysis of both, strain and relief for family carers in Europe -migrant carers for older people in Europe (under development) -palliative care for older people (under development) -accompanying research towards further gerontological training for various occupational groups (especially general practitioners) -systematic cooperation between scientific research, practice and politics on local, national and European level (knowledge transfer)
