Type of institution
Ambient Assisted Living aims to enable people to live as long as possible within their own four walls. The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft concentrates its research within this area in the Fraunhofer-Alliance AAL. The Fraunhofer ISST is one of the members.
The Fraunhofer ISST designs standards, architectures and concepts for the development of long-term stable, complex systems within the area of information and communication technology. The service offered includes training courses, surveys, evaluations and consulting services up to design and development of IT solutions. The Fraunhofer ISST puts special emphasis on long-living and evolution-capable technologies (Continuous Software Engineering) as well as on optimal information supply via IT-technologies (Information Logistics).
Main research areas
The Fraunhofer ISST is dealing with all those questions from a data processing point of view within the business unit »Ambient Assisted Living (AAL)«. The Institute develops solutions that supply low-cost telemedical and comfort functions via broadband that are easy to handle from your own home. In this way, elderly people and persons with health issues can live a self-determined life for as long as possible in the environment that is familiar to them. Furthermore, it works on information-logistic early-warning systems that exactly locate upcoming severe weather situations, so providing a warning against house and home damage.
