Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute is the main Italian institute of orthopedics and traumatology. In 1981 the Italian Health Ministry gave Rizzoli the status of a “Scientific research hospital due to its high level of healthcare in orthopedics and traumatology. Besides basic orthopedic surgery, highly specialized operations for treating musculoskeletal tumors, pediatric diseases, spine diseases sports diseases and degenerative hip and knee joint diseases are performed. Rizzoli was founded at the end of the XIX century by the famous Bolognese surgeon, Francesco Rizzoli, who bought the convent and the hill of San Michele in Bosco. He left it in his will to the Province of Bologna to be used as an orthopedic hospital. It was opened in 1896 and soon became one of the best orthopedic hospitals in the world due to its size, equipment, organization, research and teaching. This fame was above all due to Alessandro Codivilla and Vittorio Putti, the first directors who set up a prestigious school of orthopedics for numerous Italian and South American pupils.

At Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute healthcare and scientific activity is performed on the basis of a departmental organization. Every department consists of the aggregation of: -Complex healthcare structures; -Research laboratories; -Simple structures (departmental units and organizational units). The main objective of the departments is the convergence of skills of the various operational units to bring together healthcare and scientific activity. Research is divided into ongoing research and finalized research. The ongoing research is programmed according to a triennial plan that follows six thematic principals. Such themes are articulated into departmental lines of research, each of which has its scientific supervisor. The lines of research include various projects under the responsibility of a scientific coordinator. The finalized research consists of long-term projects financed by the Ministry of Health, in compliance with the objectives of the National Health Plan and also by other national and international (EU, MIUR, CNR) institutions and scientific collaborations with other national and international, public and private institutions.

Main research areas

The three main topics on ageing at IOR are represented by: 1 The analysis of physiopathological modifications of immune/inflammatory response in the elderly in order to identify the characteristics that are critical for the ageing process; 2 The study of pathogenetic mechanisms of inflammatory and degenerative rheumatic diseases (the most common pathology in subjects over-sixty year old of industrialised countries) and related advanced diagnostic methods with particular attention to intra-articular and blood soluble mediators of progressive and chronic joint damage; 3 Osteoporosis, (an age-related disorder characterized by low bone mass and increased bone fragility, resulting in raised fracture risks), that, attributed to various endocrine, metabolic and mechanical factors, is recently emerging as influenced also by pro-inflammatory bone-remodelling cytokines. European Projects: Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute has for a long time been participating and coordinating European research projects, collaborating with many partners from Europe who carry out researches in the biomedical sector. One of the projects which it participates in is “ZINCAGE that has as its object of study “Nutritional zinc, oxidative stress and immunosenescence: biochemical, genetic and lifestyle implications for healthy ageing.
