The first institute of geriatrics in the world was founded in Bucharest by Professor Ana Aslan in 1952 and has been located ever since in a prominent architectural heritage edifice. The World Health Organization, in 1963, fully acclaimed the Institute of Geriatrics organization model for the study of the medical, biological and social aspects of aging. Professor Ana Aslan, and the school she created, introduced the medical speciality of geriatrics and gerontology, the concept of preventive healthcare for older people and developed the anti-aging "Aslan therapy" (with the original products, Gerovital H3 and Aslavital) in Romania. The Ministry of Health and Family and the University of Medicine "Carol Davila" - Bucharest, coordinate the "Ana Aslan" National Institute of Gerontology and Geriatrics.


600 professionals (including 100 physicians in geriatrics and other specialties) provide healthcare and psycho-social assistance for older people at 4 clinical departments in Bucharest at the headquarters of the Institute, 4 clinical departments located 16 Km north of Bucharest with 30 hectares of natural  surroundings and an outpatients clinical department. There is also a multidisciplinary research department on the mechanisms of aging and human longevity. It also coordinates post-graduate and higher education activity, as well as the methodological forum in geriatrics for the network of regional clinical departments.

Biology of aging, age related disorders, anthropometric studies, nutritional studies, biomarkers of aging, preventive healthcare for older people, geriatric assessment, gerontological education, physical rehabilitation.
