Type of institution
La Fundación Centro de Investigación de Enfermedades Neurológicas (Fundación CIEN), Carlos III Institute of Health, manages the Consortium "Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red sobre Enfermedades Neurodegenerativas" (CIBERNED), a nationwide network of excellence for research in neurodegenerative diseases, and the Alzheimer Disease Research Unit (Unidad de Investigación del Proyecto Alzheimer; UIPA) CIEN Foundation-Reina Sofía Foundation, located into the Alzheimer Center Reina Sofía Foundation, Madrid.
The UIPA is immediately close to the assistance resources of the Alzheimer Center Reina Sofía Foundation, the nurse home and a day care center. The Research Unit contains 4 research platform: Multidisciplinary Unit (clinical specialtie, such as Neurology, Psychiatry, Nuropsicology, and Health Sociology); Laboratory of Cell Biology; Department of Neuroimaging (NMR 3 Tesla); and Department of Neuropathology and Brain Bank (BT-CIEN). A detailed decription of the UIPA has been published in Journal of Alzheimer's Disease 2010; 21: 337-348.
The Alzheimer’ Disease Research Unit has been defined as a national focal point for research into Alzheimer’s disease under the governing principles of co-ordination, integration, universality and multidisciplinary action
Main research areas
Applied clinical and neuroepidemiological research (early detection of AD and dementia; mobility and cognitive deterioration; quality of life in dementia, etc.); correlation between clinical findings and neuroimaging; funcional neuroimaging; post-processign of NMRI data; neuropathological diagnosis for rapidly evolutive dementias; prions, AD, and genetic risk factors; biomarkers in blood; etc.
