Type of institution
Academic nursing education at the University of Turku started in 1986, being responsible for masters' and doctoral education and research in nursing science. Since the begin of 1990s, gerontological nursing science has been one of the main parts of the research program in the department. Doctoral and master students attach their dissertations of gerontological nursing to this program. Gerontological nursing science education has happened in tight collaboration with the Department of Social Sciences since 1990.
The aims of the Department in gerontological nursing science are (1) to produce a nursing perspective to prevent health problems of older people and to care of older patients, (2) to develop, test and evaluate gerontological nursing interventions and their outcomes from the perspective of evidence based nursing, and (3) to support older people to live at home and to shorten their institutional care.
Main research areas
The are two main areas in the gerontological nursing science research of the Department:
Interventions in gerontological nursing and Gerontological rehabilitation nursing.
Nursing Science is the discipline of research. Gerontological nursing science research is grounded in four basic concepts: human being, health, nursing actions and environment, human individuals and their health are seen as the fundamental starting-point for nursing actions in different environments. The main focus of research thus lies on the aged client or patient.
