Description
The Finnish Centre for Interdisciplinary Gerontology (FCIG) located at the University of Jyväskylä (JyU) is located at the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences. Approximately thirty senior and junior staff form the core of FCIG and another thirty are actively involved in the network. FCIG produces knowledge needed to improve older peoples' wellbeing and independence. Main tasks include promoting interdisciplinary research into aging particularly in the area of functional capacity and health of older people and to promote academic training in gerontology nationally and internationally through collaborative networks. FCIG is very active in doctoral training in gerontology with on average twenty full time doctoral students working at the center. FCIG is disseminates of information about aging to the scientific community through congresses and published papers and textbooks, and to the public through media.
Aims
The main aim is to understand age-related changes in the ability to adapt to environmental requirements and the factors underlying these changes. The aim is to understand how disability develops in old age, what are the determinants of length of life, how could disability be prevented, what are the at risk groups of older people who could best benefit from interventions. This is done using multiple methodologies and approaches ranging from molecular biology to epidemiology, randomized controlled trials and qualitative research. In addition, the program seeks to understand the determinants of healthy ageing and the changes associated with health. Added value comes from interdisciplinary approach.
