Description
Tampere School of Public Health at the University of Tampere is a multidisciplinary academic center of research and education in public health. The School offers Bachelor´s and Master´s Degrees of Science (Public Health), participates in training of medical students and offers PhD degrees in health Sciences and Medicine. Aging and the aging society belong to the major research areas in TSPH. Academic staff with a special interest in aging numbers ca 20.
Aims
The aim is to conduct high quality multidisciplinary research on aging and the aging society in medical and social issues, to provide pre and postdoctoral research training, and to prepare professionals to work in an aging society. The research groups devoted to aging also aim to promote theoretical and methodological discussion and interdisciplinary approaches in the field.
Main research areas
The research includes many diverse projects that cover areas such as longitudinal studies on health and functioning; genetics of longevity and biological, social and psychological characteristics of the oldest old; self-rated health; aging as an individual experience and as a social and cultural phenomenon; life styles in old age; loneliness; formal and informal care; aging and environment; intergenerational relations; older people and migration; old age and technology; aging and work. Major projects include Tampere Longitudinal Study on Aging (TamELSA) ,Vitality 90+, Aging in an urban environment (URBAGE), and Age, time to death and regional characteristics as predictors of use and cost of health and social services (COCTEL).
Most projects are interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary, bringing together researchers from different basic disciplines, most often from the medical sciences and the social sciences. Particularly in longitudinal population studies, information of genetic, immunological, geriatric, psychological and sociological analyses are combined in an epidemiological framework. Several projects in social gerontology employ qualitative approaches such as ethnography and discourse analyses. Disciplines also include health economics and health care research.
