Description
The Institute for Research in Extramural Medicine is one of five research institutes of the VU University Medical Center Amsterdam. Our activities predominantly deal with research in primary care and public health, focusing on chronic diseases and ageing.
Aims
Extramural medical research, in principle, concerns the study of health and disease outside hospital walls. The Institute for Research in Extramural Medicine mainly focuses on applied research involving issues which are relevant for primary health care. Many projects deal with chronic disease and aging. The research projects are typically of a multidisciplinary nature. Our studies focus on aetiology (including primary prevention), diagnosis (including secondary prevention) or prognosis (including therapy). The interventions studied do not concern highly specialized forms of care, and should normally be applicable in an extramural or transmural setting. Evaluation often focuses jointly on both efficacy and cost-effectiveness. The Institute focuses on a research programme which makes a serious contribution to the needs of the national extramural health care system and complies with the international standards for applied research. Consequently, the dual aim of the Institute is to excel on criteria for scientific quality, as well as on criteria for societal impact.
Main research areas
Our activities predominantly deal with research in primary care and public health, focusing on chronic diseases and ageing. It concerns multidisciplinary applied research with a strong emphasis on health outcomes relevant to individuals in the extramural setting. The research projects are grouped in four consistent programmes: diabetes mellitus, common mental disorders, care and prevention, and musculoskeletal disorders.
