Description
The Geriatric Institute for Education and Research was established in 1990 by Prof. Jacob Gindin, with basic support from the donors. Presently it forms together with the Haifa University, the joint "Laboratory of Research in Geriatrics and Gerontology" (LRGG). Its main activities are in the fields of geriatric medicine research, teaching projects and research in Health Care Services for thr aged. Over the years, the institute has been involved in a many innovative projects, including clinical studies, intervention programs, and multidisciplinary and multi-center population studies. The institute took part in national and international projects. In addition to research and teaching, the institute provides consultation in study design, research methodology, and statistical analysis, to the professionals in the Kaplan Medical Centre and the Kaplan School of Nursing. The institute has headed national feasibility projects in home-care and home-hospital services for the elderly; in assessment of medication consumption; national pilot and implementation of the international (interRAI) standards and instruments in post-acute and nursing care in the country. The teaching responsibilities of the institute include teaching of foreign medical graduates (especially from the former Soviet Union), and in service training (nationwide) in Geriatrics and Gerontology for primary care doctors, teaching of nurses and social workers, and education in public health and activities in health promotion. Lately, there were two EU projects on aging that the Institute was part of' and recently there are a few Israeli (on environment) and EU (on Assisted Living ) projects initiated in the LRGG.
