Description

Created in 1987, the Psychogeriatric Research Unit takes into account the demographic importance of mental disorders in old age. In addition to research, members of the Psychogeriatric Research Unit hold regular lectures and seminars for students of medicine, gerontology, clinical psychology and social sciences. They are also strongly involved as advisors for national governmental agencies and European institutions.

Aims

Its primary objectives encompass the planning, coordination and management of psychogeriatric research projects within the fields: -Determinants and consequences of mental disorders (particularly dementia) and functional impairment at different levels of care (general population, primary care physicians, in- and outpatient geriatric facilities) -Pharmacoepidemiology, epidemiology of alcohol abuse and dependence -Burden of care among formal and informal caregivers -Evaluation of concepts and care programs for the elderly demented in institutions.

Main research areas

Current externally funded projects: -Evaluation of the special home care of the demented elderly in the city of Hamburg -Reform of inpatient health care of the demented elderly in the state of Baden-Wurttemberg: comparison of new and old concepts -Early recognition in the primary medical care of patients with dementia and mild cognitive impairment. Competence Networks Dementia -Dementia and other psychiatric disorders in the elderly in private households and in old age homes (national study).
