Description
The Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research comprises two scientific departments, "Survival and Longevity", headed by James W. Vaupel, and "Contemporary European Fertility and Family Dynamics", headed by Jan M. Hoem. Currently, the Institute houses an Independent Research Group "The Culture of Reproduction" (headed by Laura Bernardi), and finances three Junior Professors at the University of Rostock (Laura Bernardi, Michaela Kreyenfeld, Michael Kuhn). In 2005, the Institute employed more than 60 scientists and PhD students. 80 guest researchers per year are visiting the Institute for short research stays or to present papers. The Institute places strong emphasis on the training of doctoral and post-doctoral students within structured programs providing them also with excellent research conditions: the International Max Planck Research School for Demography, and the European Doctoral School of Demography (dean: Heiner Maier). The research of the scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research is complemented and supported by the Laboratory for Demographic Data (headed by Vladimir Shkolnikov) and the Statistics and Information Services (headed by Jutta Gampe).
Aims
The Laboratory of Survival and Longevity forms the core of the Institute's research program on Aging, Survival and Longevity. The research program looks to answer one of the most fundamental questions in demography: "Why is longevity so plastic?" To this end, the Laboratory members study the history of life expectancy and longevity, the consequences of rising life expectancy at both the individual and population level, and the causes of mortality and mortality change.
Main research areas
The Laboratory for Survival and Longevity currently has four research groups: "Evolutionary Biodemography", "Biomedical, Environmental, and Social Determinants of Aging", "Modeling and Analyses of Longitudinal and Experimental Data on Aging, Aging Related Health Disorders, and Longevity", and "Policy-relevant Demography".
