Description
The Institute of Medical Sociology was newly founded in March 2002, besides 9 other institutes it is part of the Center for Humanities and Health Sciences in Berlin. Director of the Institute is Professor Dr. phil. Adelheid Kuhlmey. Approximately 13 research associates, 8 student assistants and a secretary belong to the Institute. There are tree departments within the Institute: I Medical Care and Nursing II Demographic Change and Ageing III Women`s Health
Aims
The aim is research on health care provision and quality of life, describing and questioning the impact of different perspectives of delivering care,assessing deficits in health care provision - all related to practice. Enhancing the health status of patients due to improved health care provision is an important focus of scientific activities. Political consulting is also one of the tasks of the IMS. For teaching in university our purpose is to enlarge the understanding and reflection of medical students for modern sociological issues in order to develop their professional competence in interacting with patients of different age and background.
Main research areas
The research activities focus on issues concerning ageing. In particular there is an interest on the health care provision and quality of life of elderly people. Different phenomenas of multimorbidity are investigated by graduate students within a PhD Program It offers young scientists the opportunity to earn a doctorate on a topic related to the care of multimorbid geriatric patients.
