Type of institution
The Institute of Nursing at the University of Bielefeld was founded in 1995 as an associated institute at the University of Bielefeld. It is a non-profit organization for the promotion of nursing science in Germany and part of the Bielefelder School of Public Health (Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Bielefeld).
The institute's work in general is focused on three aims: 1) development of nursing science (theoretical and methodical concepts), 2) development and evaluation of research based concepts of nursing care, 3) promotion of quality improvement in health services and transfer of knowledge between science and practice.
Main research areas
Most research activities of the institute refer to the care of chronically ill patients and older people. The long term care, especially in nursing homes, represents an important research area as well as home care and models of integrated, non-hospitalized health care services. Within these areas, care of people with dementia, end-of-life care, communication and professional collaboration, the patient's view, patient education and counselling, case management and transitions between levels of care are main research issues.
