Aims
The mission of the LCS is enabling research in the basic and applied sciences, especially in interdisciplinary research thereby increasing the general knowledge base and contributing to meeting society's needs for research in all areas.
Main research areas
Latvian Council of Science is responsible for ensuring a high level of expertise in all sciences represented in Latvia. The main objectives of LCS are to contribute to the development of the R&D system and to initiate and support research mainly fundamental research in different research fields. Through its 2 research programmes, the LCS funds mainly researchers’ initiated projects. One of these programmes – Program of thematic research projects, is aimed at creating new knowledge in certain field and solving concrete research problems. Another is Program of research cooperation project aiming at promoting cooperation in research and common use of research infrastructure (data base, collection, unique research infrastructure etc.). The general aim is to raise the overall quality of research, by promoting interdisciplinary approach, and to establish and strengthen the knowledge base within the fields concerned. This research programme currently funds one research projects related to ageing issues.
