Type of institution
The IdiPAZ Institute for Health Research was created as a place for biomedical research, as a result of the relationship that has been forged over the years between La Paz University Hospital (HULP) and the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM).
This strategic alliance has enabled multidisciplinary teams belonging to the above institutions to be set up in order to take on joint research projects, making the most of the human and material research resources at their disposal and promoting fundraising for research.
IdiPAZ was formally established on 15 December 2009, through the signing of a collaboration Agreement between the Madrid Health Service, the Autonomous University of Madrid, the Foundation for Biomedical Research of La Paz University Hospital and the Lain Entralgo Agency for Training, Research and Health Studies in the Region of Madrid, for the creation and development of the Institute for Health Research of La Paz University Hospital (IdiPAZ).
IdiPAZ manages all of the resources for research, development and innovation at the centre in order to contribute to the promotion and protection of the health of the population. It was accredited on 19 April 2010 by the Ministry of Science and Innovation.
The accreditation of IdiPAZ recognises the excellence of the research teams of La Paz University Hospital and the UAM, and facilitates access to official calls for public funding, both general and specific, for Health Research Institutes..
It has 43 research groups that focus their activities on six major areas:
Neuroscience, Cardiovascular, Infectious Diseases and Immunity, Large System Diseases, Cancer and human molecular Genetics and, finally, Surgery, Transplants and Health Technologies.
The mission of IdiPAZ is to establish itself as a leader in translational biomedical research on a national and international level. To achieve this, the Institute aims to promote high quality, basic, clinical, epidemiological and health services research.
In addition, its work aims to promote and develop programmes and projects for research or researcher training, focusing particularly on the scientific training of professionals in research methodology and the requirements of primary care.
Safeguarding the quality, ethics and ethical principles of research are cornerstones of the work IdiPAZ performs every day, in addition to promoting the efficient use of resources and infrastructures.
The ultimate goal of the Institute is to promote the translation of the results of the work of its researchers:
• to society, transferring the knowledge generated from its activities in clinical practice
• to the scientific world, by disseminating its activities across generated publications and scientific reports by the institute
• to the economy by promoting innovation and the transfer of results
