Description
The Centre for Applied Gerontology was established to increase the awareness of architects, designers, manufacturers of domestic appliances and service providers to the different needs of the older population. Situated at Selly Oak Hospital, the Centre can draw upon substantial academic and research resources from which it can offer a broad spectrum of services to business and industrial clients.
Aims
The Centre for Applied Gerontology seeks to promote awareness of the needs of older people amongst designers by conducting research and by disseminating its findings. Motto: Design for the young and you exclude the old; Design for the old and you include the young. This motto reflects the philosophy of the Centre in that it directs attention to: A better understanding by designers and manufacturers of the needs of older people. Products and services that are suitable and satisfying for older people as they are for a younger generation.
Main research areas
Applied Gerontology is the study of the interaction between the ageing process and the human-designed environment. The study researches the strength, skills and feelings of older people, as well as their weaknesses and disabilities. It gathers information on what they think about the products of modern industry, what are their unmet needs, and how industry can best provide these
