Description
SISA was established in 1993 as a research oriented applied geriatrics and gerontology unit in the School of Medical and Biomedical Sciences. It has two arms: the core group, an inter-disciplinary research group of clinical and social science researchers, and a cross-faculty federation of University staff with interests in gerontology. The core group's expertise extends from clinical medicine to ethnographic research: we have particular interests in geriatric assessment, intermediate care, stroke rehabilitation, palliative care, dementia care, housing choice, the organisation and effectiveness of community health and personal social services, and the development and appraisal of homeless services. SISA researchers are presently conducting projects funded by the EU, MRC, ESRC, EPSRC and the DH. During 2001-06, SISA was recognised by the EU as a Marie Curie Training Centre in Geriatrics and Gerontology, through which it has hosted many doctoral researchers from across Europe, who during their Fellowship have pursued advanced thematic and research-skills training courses. The SISA cross faculty research network in the university of Sheffield has an Executive drawn from the biological, engineering, social science, nursing and medical school departments, and a faculty membership of over 50 researchers. It is headed by the director, Professor Stuart Parker. The patron of SISA is Baroness Sally Greengross OBE, Director of UK International Longevity Centre.
Aims
Drawing strength from many departments in the University, our mission is to undertake first-class research into finding cost-effective ways for improving quality of life in old age, with or without extension to life. In addition to its research activities, the Institute plays a role in influencing policy on ageing and in training the next generation of researchers on ageing. The Institute has links to service and advocacy groups in South Yorkshire, where it has a direct impact on improving the quality of life of older people in the Region.
Main research areas
Research on human ageing and on older people at the University of Sheffield ranges over several broad and loosely-bounded fields, from biological, neurological and behavioural investigations of basic ageing processes and the diseases and disorders of old age, to studies of the diverse experiences and circumstances of older people in Britain, Europe and beyond. Between these two highly contrasted (relatively) 'pure' fields of interest is found a large and heterogeneous body of 'applied' research. It ranges from 'clinical research' in medicine, the therapies and nursing, through health and social services research into effective 'service development, organisation and delivery', and then into the roles of other formal and informal carers and supporters of older people (as in conventional and specialised housing and residential and nursing homes), to studies that provide information, analysis, critiques and proposals for practice development and social policy formulation
