Description
The institute is mainly dedicated to the study of quality of life, including living conditions, health care, employment, household structure and family relations, housing, community life and social participation. Research is strongly linked to social policy and special attention is given to vulnerable groups in Romanian society. Among these groups, the elderly are very much in focus and the research is trying to answer the challenges that are currently facing Romania in relation to old age: demographic development characterised by ageing, high number of retired persons, low life expectancy etc. Director of the Institute of Quality of Life is Prof.dr. Catalin Zamfir, corresponding member of the Romanian Academy. Scientific director is Prof.dr. Ioan Marginean.
Aims
The mission of the institute is to provide policy makers and civil society actors with valuable information on the developments in the field of quality of life in Romania and European countries. By carrying out both theoretical and empirical research it contributes to the development of social policies in Romania and also evaluates the social policies adopted in the country during the period of transition. Research on elderly aims at description and explanation of the general situation of this category in Romania, evaluation of social services and health services provided to old people, study of pension system, designing proposals for improving social policy in this fields. The ICCV develops co-operation with research institutes and universities around the world and takes part in international research programs.

Quality of Life, including quality of life of elderly, Social Policy and Social Development, Standard of Living and Consumption Patterns, Human Development and Social Capital, Community Development The institute conducts a doctoral programme in sociology (social policies and social assistance) in partnership with the University of Bucharest. We publish books, studies, reviews, brochures, research reports and provides consultancy in our field of expertise. Our Journal "Calitatea Vietii" (Quality of Life), with four issues per year, is published under the auspice of Romanian Academy.
