Type of institution
The National Institute for Health Research and Development (NIHRD) was established on January 1st, 2003 as a result of the reorganization of the former Institute for Health Services Management (IHSM). NIHRD is located in Bucharest and coordinated by the Romanian Ministry of Health. The IHSM, whose work NIHRD continues, was created in 1992 as a World Bank project for health management development in Romania. The IHSM was founded to expand and develop the country's health reform strategy and to design and provide trainings in health services management. From 1993-1996, IHSM organized education programs with financing from a World Bank loan and the external support of organization including the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, The University of Montreal, and New York University's Department of Health Care Administration. Since 1996, these training programs have been further developed by Romanian trainers and are provided to this day.
NIHRD aims to offer relevant information and evidence-based solutions to the problems confronting the managers involved in health services planning and delivery, in order to make informed and responsible decisions. We achieve our goal through specific, tailored activities of research, consultancy and training in the field of public health and health services management. Our mission is to become a center of excellence for the implementation, support and monitoring the health system reform and development in Romania. In our vision, people health and welfare are the core resources for developing our economy and integrating Romania in the EU.
