Type of institution
The Laboratoire d'Economie et de Gestion des Organisations de Santé was created in 1973 and it brings together several researchers and lecturers. The Centre develops research activities, teaching and expertise in the field of economics within health and social sectors. Theoretical and applied research is undertaken, with an emphasis on health economics, the economic of pharmaceutics and the pharmaceutical industry. During the last 10 years the Centre has specialised in the economics of the socio-medical sector, chronic diseases and economical consequences of ageing. This research is undertaken in collaboration with other research centres, both nationally and internationally. Members of LEGOS are involved in advising public bodies, principally in the field of medicine and the care of older people.
The Centre's work is undertaken with the objective of understanding the macro economic implications of the ageing population. This is done by working on the economic aspects of ageing and by analysing social policies directed towards older people. Research is currently focussed on the behaviour of older people who require technological services for help and support. In 1998, a seminar "Structures par âge et dynamique économique » was held within the Centre which has created links with other researchers working in this area.
Main research areas
The research of LEGOS during the past years has focussed principally on health care systems and the evaluation of medical strategies and therapies, pharmaceutical usage, and the economy of ageing. It has a particular interest in international research and collaboration and has recently intensified work in this area. The research of the Centre covers four main areas: - Health economics and public health policy - Economic implications of the pharmaceutical industry - Economic implication of the medico-social aspects of health in the context of chronic disease - Economic implications of ageing populations.
