Summary of key aims

EPSRC support for research focussed on the understanding and meeting the needs of older people has been made available through the EQUAL Initiative. Two key initiatives funded by the EPSRC are:

The EQUAL (Extending QUAlity Life) Initiative
The EQUAL Network

The EQUAL Initiative was established to address the needs of an ageing population and people with disabilities to help them achieve a better life style, participate more fully and actively and avoid or alleviate the effects of disability. EPSRC has funded projects through four calls within the EQUAL Initiative:

EQUAL in the built environment (1997)
EQUAL in the built environment and design for all (1998)
Rehabilitation and design for all (1999)
Prolonging independence in old age (2001)

Thirty four projects with a total value of £5.4M were funded through the first three calls of the EQUAL Initiative.

Five multidisciplinary consortia with a total value of £3.1M were funded through the fourth call. The consortia are:

SMART Rehabilitation: Technological applications for use in the home (Sheffield Hallam University)
Supporting independence. New products, new practices, new communities (Imperial College)
Inclusive design for getting outdoors (IDGO) (Edinburgh College of Art)
Investigating enabling domestic environments for people with dementia (INDEPENDENT) (University of Liverpool)
Inclusive Design 2: providing tools to improve quality of life for the wider population (University of Cambridge)
