Summary of key aims

The main purpose of the survey was to study the relationship and exchanges, both financial and in kind, between the three generations within families and to relate those exchanges to what each generation gives and receives from the State in the way of taxes, social contributions, and benefits.

The cross-sectional survey was undertaken in 1992 and involved 2.000 families where there were at least three adult members of different generations living in France but not necessarily living in the same household. One member of each generation was interviewed.. The trigenerational sample was anchored on the middle generation (aged 49 to 53), which we call the pivot. Then we interviewed their parents, the elderly, and their children, the young. In sum, 5.000 people were interviewed face to face through questionnaires lasting about one hour and half.

Second, the same design of research was applied to a survey done in French Indies, in Guadeloupe, combining a quantitative survey to a qualitative one, on 3 family generations, between 1994 and 1996

Third, a qualitative survey was done in 1996 on a sample of 30 lineages (that includes 90 people), living in France.

These three generations represent at the same time clearly differentiated family generations. They are also three different welfare generations. All of the elderly were retired, all of the middle generation were actively working, and the young generation was in transition between their education and their employment. In addition, these generations represent three different socio-historical generations because of the consistent age difference between them and the relative homogeneity of age within each generation.
This empirical construction allow us both to study private and public exchanges between generations, and to also study the social changes at work in the differences of behavior and attitudes across these three generations.
