Summary of key aims

This is a joint research programme of kinship and family solidarities that was financed
jointly by the Ministry of Employment and Solidarity and the Caisse Nationale d'Allocations
Familiales. Because the theme of family solidarity is very broad, several definitions were
retained for the programme under two main themes: family strategies for support and family
obligations (which in France are enshrined in law). These two main forms of solidarity are
examined both at the individual level and at the level of institutions.
A principal objective of the programme was to have a multi-disciplinary approach involving
research projects from economists, historians, lawyers, political and social scientists.
The programmes sollicited research projects either on specific dimensions of the family life cycle
,(young parents, older persons) as well as projects examining more generally intergenerational relationships.
Throughout the life of the programme (2001-2004) regular seminars were held involving all the participants.
These seminars were designed to help develop work in progress.
