If you find yourself getting a bit lost, try using one of the links below to get back to the beginning:

  • Go back to the start page
You can search the whole database for specific search terms, choose a country or browse by category.
  • Perform an advanced search
Useful when you know what you're looking for, and where the data might be stored.
  • Browse all Research Centres and Funders
See a list of all centres from where you can view details and the programmes and projects that are associated with that centre/funder.
  • Browse all Research Programmes
See a list of all the research programmes in the database. When you look at one you will automatically see which Research Funder/Centre it belongs too, and you can explore this programme's projects or see other programmes within the same funder/centre.
  • Browse all Researchers
Individual researchers are not "attached" to any particular project or programme. If you want to narrow down the list you could choose a country on the start page and look at the list on the left of the page..

Summary of key aims

Founded by Don Gnocchi to provide care, rehabilitation and social integration for children who lost limbs in the war, the Foundation has gradually expanded the scope of its operations. In the past half-century, it has mainly dealt with patients of all ages who require neurological, orthopaedic, cardiac and respiratory care. Since the 1980s, it has expanded to assisting elderly people and, in the past few years, terminal cancer patients.
Looking at research activities, the Foundation works in sectors of bio-medicine, bio-technology and clinical experimentation to discover new methods and new technologies for rehabilitation and reducing disability conditions. Research, with its vast spin-off applications, is constantly inter-related with clinical and care activities. This multi-disciplinary approach has led to advanced projects in neurology, orthopaedics and cardio-respiratory sectors also by means of innovative bio-engineering and biomolecular techniques.
The project topics refer to seven basic research areas:
„X Biomedical Technologies for function diagnosis and recovery.
„X Diseases of the nervous system: recovery from biological damage and motor and cognitive disabilities.
„X Definition and application of biomolecular technologies for the study of the impact of genetic, biochemical, immunological and virological factors in determining neurological diseases and recovery, and their role in the damaging and repair mechanisms affecting nervous system cells.
„X Disorders of the musculoskeletal system: diagnostic and rehabilitative strategies for recovery from biological damage and disabilities.
„X Cardiorespiratory rehabilitation.
„X Technologies for social integration and public health.
„X Diseases and disorders of the cardiocirculatory system.

Within all these research areas there are projects devoted to elderly needs in health care, rehabilitation, home and hospital assistance. See in the following tables the details of the main research projects, strongly integrated within the clinical and care activities of the Foundation.
