Summary of key aims

The Institute for Longevity and Ageing is a Scientific Interest Group (GIS) whose partners are the Ministry of Research, the Ministry of Health, the State Department for the Elderly, CNRS (National Institute of Scientific Research), INSERM (National Institute of Health and Medical Research) and INED (National Institute for Demographic Studies). Created in 2002, it aims at federating competences and means so as to develop a research programme centered on ageing questions, to determine priority actions, to coordinate research and to promote the visibility of these questions at the national level. The GIS also plans to participate to the implementation of networks of excellence at the European level.Beyond biological and medical researches, the programme also supports studies and researches in social sciences : economy, demography, sciences of society. Calls for projects from the GIS are opened to all labelised French research teams (public research institutions, university, university hospital complex) from all disciplines: biology and molecular physiology, cellular and integrated, clinical researches, physiopathological, epidemiological, human and social science. High level projects in fundamental research that might give rise to major advances are particularly supported.
