Summary of key aims

Alzheimer's and other dementias affect about one in ten elderly persons and bring about unspeakable grief to the ill person and his/her own family and huge costs to society.

The Scientific Institute "San Giovanni di Dio" (St John of God) is based in Brescia, Northern Italy. It was founded in 1880 and since 1996 has been appointed as a scientific institute of national relevance (Istituto di Ricovero e Cura Carattere Scientifico - IRCCS). It is funded by the National Health System as the national centre of excellence for Alzheimer's and psychiatric diseases. Its mission involves translational research, i.e. developing models of care that can be taken up by other Italian clinical centres.

Its staff of 20 physicians and psychologists treat 4500 persons with Alzheimer's or associated disorders yearly. Sixty professional researchers work in the laboratories of genetics, neurobiology, neuroimaging, neuropsychophysiology, neuropsychology, ethics, epidemiology and telemedicine producing more than 60 authoritative scientific papers yearly, all published in international journals and summing up over 300 points of impact factor yearly.
It is owned by the Fatebenefratelli Religious Order (Do Well Brothers), the largest private health care group in the world. Fourteen hundred Brothers manage 389 health care activities in 49 countries of 5 continents.
