Summary of key aims

The IRCCS Santa Lucia has played an important part in the development of an important area of medicine, i.e., "Rehabilitation", aimed at partially or totally recovering impaired functions in the disabled, by making use of experience acquired in the yearly hospitalization of almost two thousand patients, and the treatment of about 500 outpatients and Day Hospital patients.

Since 1992, when the scientific nature of the Foundation was formally recognized, Santa Lucia's activities have expanded in neurorehabilitation and the neurosciences and also include research aimed at preventing and limiting the invalidating effects of CNS pathologies.

In particular, much attention has been devoted to aging and to aging related disease such as Alzheimer's Disease and Parkinson's Disease but also diseases which are more frequent in aged subjects such as stroke. Research on aging related diseases amounts to about 20% of all the activities performed by both clinical and preclinical research laboratories of Santa Lucia Foundation involving the Departments of: Clinical and Behavioral Neurology, Neuromotor physiology, Experimental Neuroscience, Neuropsychology, Neurophysiology, Functional Neuroimaging and Clinical Translational Research.
