Summary of key aims

An Important aim of INED is to develop and encourage either on it sown initiative or by request from other public bodies (Ministries, etc) all type of research associated with the study of populations in all their contexts. This necessarily includes research on ageing. The programme of research on issues concerned with ageing is loosely defined, but focuses mainly on a) demographic studies concerning mortality and life expectancy, the changing structure of the population that results from increased longevity and decreased fertility. These studies often have the aim of projecting or forecasting future changes in the population structure by statistical methods such as micro-simulation and b) the social implications of these changes such as leisure pursuits and other activities in retirement, family generational structures and the exchange of support and services. These latter projects involve both secondary analysis of existing data sets as well as original surveys and qualitative interviews. Projects within the programme generally concern France but there is extensive collaboration with European and other international institutions.
