Summary of key aims

The research program "Pathophysiology of Ageing" aims to study biological and genetic mechanisms associated with healthy ageing and longevity as well as to evaluate the relationships among clinical, biological and genetic factors in subjects with age-related frailty and disabilities. Most of projects are focused on the role of the comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) as a useful tool for identifying the high risk subjects in order to prevent frailty and disabilities. Clinical and genetic aspects of age-related disorders of the CNS (i.e. vascular and degenerative dementias, including Alzheimer Disease), cardio-cerebral and peripheral vascular disorders and gastrointestinal (GI) disorders in elderly people (i.e. upper and lower GI tract diseases) are especially considered. Several projects aimed to evaluate epidemiology and clinical aspects of the adverse drug reactions (ADR) in the elderly. Moreover, the relationships between genetics and the response to therapies (CNS, GI tract, cardiovascular system, ect.) as well as the ADRs are explored.
