Summary of key aims
The general objective of this research programme is to produce information that can help contain the problems and challenges presented by the ageing of the population. The purpose is to explore the ageing process, its nature and underlying factors as a biological, psychological, social, cultural and societal phenomenon. The aim of the programme is to enhance international networking of Finnish ageing research teams. Funding is allocated only to projects which collaborate with international research teams. A special aim of the programme is to encourage collaboration with the New Dynamics of Ageing Research Programme funded by the British research councils.
Research themes in this programme include mitochondrial activity as a cause of ageing, physiological, psychosocial and genetic factors of ageing, functional capacity, the living environment of the ageing population, social determinants of health and mortality in ageing population, services for the aged and early retirement.
The aims have been focused as: 1) to help the society to deal with the problems and challenges presented by the ageing of the population, 2) to activate innovative basic and applied research of ageing issues, 3) to promote international cooperation of the Finnish researchers and 4) to promote dialogue between different disciplines and fields of inquiry witihin ageing research
