Summary of key aims

This social science research programme is concerned with the reciprocal implications of technological developments and individual and collective ageing.
Its objective are :
- to develop social science research activity and to support work at the interface of the fields of, on the one hand, the ageing population and elderly people's lifestyles and, on the other , "modernity" and the spread of technology into everyday life and into personal services. In the current period the social sciences seem to have shown comparatively little interest in exploring the degree to which social relations are influenced by the presence of technology in daily life;
- to analyse in greater depth the processes relating to the sphere of ""technologics"" - provision and providers - and those belonging to the domain of ""anthropo-logics"" - uses and users - based on an understanding of the age factor and the various phenomena linked to ageing.
Proposals were invited on two separate occasions , on the basis of a text situating and presenting the general issues and research orientations of this programme :
- The first call for proposals was put out in 1996 by MIRE (Misison Recherche - Ministerial Research Unit) and CNAV (Caisse Nationale d'Assurance Vieillesse - National Pension Scheme). The results of the eight projects selected, together with a report synthetising their main conclusions, form the body of the present book.
- On the second occasion that proposals were invited, in 1997, funding was made available for thirteen research projects, which are now in progress and will finish in 2000 and 2001. . This second stage of the programme was opened up to a broader range of institutional partners, bringing together eight organizations active at the national level in the domains of technology and the public services.
