Summary of key aims

The Swedish Council for Social Research (SFR) was a government body under the authority of the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs. SFR started its activities in 1990 and ended in 2000 when it was merged with the Swedish Council for Working Life Research. The new council is called the Swedish Council for Working Life and Social Research (FAS). SFR mission was to promote and support basic and applied social research, support coooperation among researchers and to provide information about research in social science. SFR supported projects, programmes (6 yr support to established research groups within specific areas) and research positions. Projects were the main form of support.
SFR:s support for research covered eight themes: Social policy and social insurance, social welfare, family and children, disability, public health and health services, elderly, international migration and ethnic relations, alcohol and drug abuse. Support for research on the elderly made up about 10% of the funding budget on average.
The board of SFR was made up 14 researchers elected by the universities. Six members and the chair were appointed by the government. The board members were also members of the three committees reviewing applications.
Decisions on funding projects were taken in two steps. First an outline submitted in March every yr and then a full application submitted in June by those whose outline was approved. Full applications were also sent for review to one external reviewer.
